Assistive Technology and the "PLAN" First Step: consider whether technology can support an individual. Look across the person’s day and identify those areas where the individual needs to be more independent or productive. Various assistive technology (A.T.) Devices, strategies, are available to allow a person to fully participate in life activities. What is an assistive technology device? Assistive Technology devices are defined as "any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities" (IDEA, Sec.602(1)). What devices are covered by IDEA? Because Congress did not want to limit the range of tools and equipment that might be made available to individuals with disabilities, the legal definition of an A.T. device is very broad. Thousands of items meet this definition. A.T. devices are items that can help people live, learn, work, play, talk, and move around independently. Who is Eligible for A.T. Devices and Services? Adults are eligible for devices and services through federal and state dollars distributed through the Assistive Technology for Kansas Project. Various funding sources might be utilized: Voc. Rehab., Medicaid, Insurance, etc. Assistive Technology devices and services should be included in the plan, whether it be an IPP, IHP, ELP, PCP, etc. |
